Fiber Optic Cabling
For the utmost in communication quality in channels ranging from voice to video, and applications such as high speed internet access, fiber optic cabling is a proven solution with many cost saving and performance benefits. But to deploy or upgrade a fiber optic cabling system requires certain expertise to ensure a scalable and flexible communications infrastructure that guarantees speed and reliability.
Consider the performance, efficiency and TCO advantages of a passive optical network, or PON, a point-to-multipoint, fiber-to-the-user network architecture that employs unpowered optical splitters that enable a single strand of singlemode optical fiber to serve multiple users, reducing the amount of physical cable and active equipment in an installation.
For hundreds of companies in dozens of industries, FCI has provided fiber optic cabling installation services for PONs and other solutions that have met the communication needs of today while preparing businesses for the opportunities of tomorrow. Our team undergoes consistent training to ensure we are constantly up to speed on both the latest fiber optic technologies and the latest communication needs for specific industries and/or applications.
Fiber Optic Cabling Installation Checklist
In any project, renovation, upgrade or installation, planning is always one of the most critical stages. Proper planning leads to proper execution and the elimination of a great number of hurdles and obstacles that may have otherwise popped up along the way. In the world of fiber optic cabling installation, the need for planning is even higher as you’re dealing with a very high-tech product with high-tech demands.
The Fiber Optic Association, Inc has released a comprehensive checklist that’s built and designed for the planning stages of an upcoming fiber optic cabling installation. While each project is vastly different and the list might need some tweaking, it’s a great jump into exactly what is needed to plan a fiber optic cabling installation. The checklist is broken into 4 parts, a Pre-Install Checklist, Before Starting the Install, During the Installation and After Completion. Here are a few tips, according to the FOA, to add to the checklist:
- Main Point of Contact/Project Manager Chosen
- Link Communications Requirements Set
- Equipment and Component Requirements Set and Vendors Chosen
- Link Route Chosen, Permits Obtained
- Cable Plant Component and Vendors Chosen
Before Starting the Install
- All Permits Available for Inspection
- Sites Prepared, Power Available
- All Components on Site, Inspected, 24-hour Security Arranged
During the Installation:
- Inspect Worksmanship
- Daily Review of Process, Progress, Test Data
After Completion of Cable Plant Installation
- Inspect Worksmanship
- Review Test Data on Cable Plant
- Set Up & Test Communications System
